black history article.

"A white man is a white man. Let him be white. A black man is a black man. Let him be black. Just watch the way they treat you as a human being. Treat folks right, and respect them the way God would have you do. Let history take care of itself." - Ethel Darden of Hyde Park, Illinois.

Ethel Darden is 110 years old. she was born on feburary 17, 1900. her age is astonishing and as is her long-term memory. this wonderful southern native remembers growing up around jim crow laws and the fight for civil rights. she has sang for and marched with Martin Luther King Jr.

she has no diseases and is in full health. she speaks about how when the civil rights act was passed, how free at last she felt. she has said she's lived a good life.

she doesn't quite call it 'black history' month. to her its just history. ethel darden came from a family of educators and she is a tied with another super centenarian; in being the oldest resident in Illinois.
